Bowen Technique
at the Chiron Centre, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol

What is Bowen?
The Bowen Technique, developed in the 1950s by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia, is based on the principle that our bodies have an inherent and continuous self-healing and self-correcting process that can be stimulated to return to its previous healthy condition.

Bowen Technique is a powerful, manual therapy that is easily administered. There is no manipulation. Instead, a series of precisely placed rolling motions of the thumbs or fingers are made over tendons, muscles or nerves. These gentle moves are made either on the skin or through light clothing and in any position comfortable to the patient

Because of the gentle application, Bowen Technique is safe for all ages, from babies to the elderly.

What can Bowen Technique treat?
Bowen Technique is an effective remedial therapy for those overcoming sports injuries, accidents and other ailments. Rehabilitation time is improved, regardless of how old or recent the injury may be. Chronically ill patients benefit as well as the disabled. Problems Bowen can help with include:

• Allergies • Kidney & Bladder disorders
• Arthritis • Knee, Hip & Pelvic restrictions & pain
• Asthma and other respiratory problems • Menstrual and other female problems
• Back, Neck & Arm Pain • Prostate problems
• Chronic Fatigue (ME) • Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI)
• Digestive upsets & disorders • Sciatica
• Foot problems (plantar fasciitis, bunions) • Shoulder pain including Frozen Shoulder
• Headaches (migraine, sinuses) • TMJ problems including teeth grinding

What does a treatment feel like?
A Bowen treatment consists of a series of gentle moves on skin (or through light loose clothing), with the client usually lying on a bed or comfortable treatment couch. Regular pauses between moves give the body time to respond and benefit. A treatment session frequently results in a deep sense of overall relaxation, allowing the body to recharge and balance itself.

What will happen on my first visit?
Your first consultation will be longer than subsequent sessions as we will discuss your current symptoms and take a detailed health history in order to create an individual treatment plan. Thereafter, treatments will last from 40 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the treatment required.

How many treatments will I need?
As each person and their condition are unique, the number of treatments will vary. Simple, acute problems can be resolved quite quickly, whilst more chronic conditions will require more treatments. The first 3-6 sessions are weekly; thereafter, if required, treatments become less frequent. Many people in good health come back for regular treatments to maintain optimal body balance
