Osteopathy
at the Chiron Centre, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol

What is Osteopathy?
Osteopaths believe that the function or health of the body is crucially dependent on harmony within it's structure. For example a patient with a painful shoulder may have an old fracture of the collar bone distorting and upsetting movement. The child who is susceptible to recurrent ear infections may well have problems with the upper neck vertebra which prevent free drainage from the ears.

Your first visit
The consultation begins with a thorough case history. This will include your current health and past medical history. Patients often wonder why this information is relevant, for example, to their back injury. However, I do not have access to your GP's records and some pains may be more serious than at first appear. You will be also be asked about your lifestyle, your work and leisure activities. This enables me to tailor my advice to your specific circumstances. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

I will then conduct an examination. You may need to remove some items of clothing. I will gain information about your body's structure by watching how your body moves and feeling the area causing you problems.

Using findings from the case history and examination I will suggest a likely diagnosis, mode of treatment and estimate the likely number of sessions needed. If I believe that the condition is unlikely to respond to osteopathic treatment then I'd advise on how to seek further care.

The way that osteopaths treat can vary enormously, from the thrusts that make joints click, a dynamic intervention, to cranial, a listening technique. We may use massage and articulation (passive stretching of joints) and other forms of listening techniques to restore free movement and disperse stress in the structures of the body. The approaches that I use lean towards these listening techniques, which suggest a change, rather than impose one, and then wait for the body's healing potential to be invoked.

After your treatment you may be given advice on exercise, stretching, posture and diet. This is designed to accelerate your healing and ensure that your condition can be prevented as much as possible in the future.
