Pilates at the Chiron Centre, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol Pilates (originally Contrology) has been around for some 80 years. Its founder Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born in 1880 and was a frail and sickly child who suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. He was determined to overcome his fragility and developed a form of exercise that rebuilt his body so effectively that by the age of fourteen he was posing for anatomical drawings. Through the transformation of his own body and the influences of ideas such as weight training, gymnastics, yoga and dance he devised his method and adopted a philosophy based on that of the ancient greeks mens sana in corpore sano (a sound mind in a healthy body). Most importantly Joseph Pilates could see that modern living, particularly in a city, was having disastrous effects on people’s health and fitness levels. He thought that there was a clear connection between poor posture, sedentary lifestyles and ill health. Pilates has been referred to as a form of mental and physical conditioning and is a great deal more than a workout. Pilates claims that ‘contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit’. Benefits of Pilates
